At Alliance Partnership International, we recently launched the API Global Leadership Pulse, an internal survey designed to capture how executive search professionals across our network are reading the current leadership landscape in their respective markets. While not intended as a statistical study, the responses provide a valuable cross-market perspective grounded in daily work with boards, leadership teams and senior candidates.
Leadership demand remains active, but measured
One of the first signals is that demand for senior leadership remains stable overall, with some markets reporting moderate growth. This suggests that organisations continue to invest in leadership, but with greater focus and selectivity.

CEO succession is becoming more contextual
When it comes to CEO succession, there is no dominant model emerging. Responses are evenly distributed, confirming that boards are increasingly making context-driven decisions rather than following a single formula.

Boards want leaders who can transform, grow and think long term
At the same time, priorities at board level are becoming clearer. The results point to a strong convergence around three capabilities: transformation leadership, strategic vision and commercial growth. Together, these reflect a growing expectation for leaders who can not only define direction, but also drive change and deliver results in uncertain environments.

Fit matters more than availability
The most consistent insight across all responses, however, relates to hiring challenges. A clear majority of participants identified cultural and leadership fit as the main difficulty in senior recruitment — well ahead of factors such as candidate availability or compensation. This reinforces a key reality in executive search: beyond skills and experience, alignment with context and culture is often the decisive factor.

Across all markets, one broader theme stands out. Leaders today are expected to navigate uncertainty, make decisions under pressure and combine strategic clarity with human judgment. This combination appears increasingly critical as organisations face faster decision cycles and more complex environments. The API Global Leadership Pulse offers a relevant insight: the leadership challenge is no longer just about identifying capable individuals, but about finding leaders with the capacity to operate effectively in increasingly demanding conditions. That shift is likely to remain central to executive search and leadership advisory in the years ahead.
Perspectives from across markets
Selected member perspectives provide an additional layer of insight into how leadership trends are taking shape across markets. Together, they reinforce the value of combining local expertise with a broader international view:
